EFFECTIVE GRADUATE WRITING

Graduate writing is a consistent challenge for graduate students, regardless of their background or experience. In this workshop, we will cover three topics that can increase your capacity for effective graduate writing. First, we will discuss key writing principles that can deepen engagement with the task of academic writing. Second, we will explore revision strategies that can assist you in improving the structure, sentences, and flow of your writing. Finally, we will consider how to build a productive writing routine. Learning to write is a crucial part of graduate education; the goal of this workshop is to help you develop an autonomous approach to managing your writing life.

LİSANSÜSTÜ EĞİTİMDE ARAŞTIRMA VE YAYIN ETİĞİ

Araştırma ve yayın etiği konusu son yıllarda akademinin gündemine en sık gelen konulardan biri olmuştur. Araştırma ve yayın etiği ihlalleri bireylere ve kurumlara zarar verdiği gibi akademinin saygınlığına da olumsuz yansımaları olmaktadır. Bu seminerde ilk olarak en sık karşılaşılan araştırma ve yayın etiği ihlalleri tartışılacaktır. Buna ek olarak, TÜBİTAK 1001 programı çerçevesinde desteklenen ve Prof. Dr. Yaşar Kondakçı tarafından yürütülen lisansüstü öğrencilerin araştırma ve yayın etiği konusundaki ihtiyaç, tutum ve davranışlarını ortaya çıkarmayı ve tutum ve davranışları yordayan değişkenleri incelemeyi amaçlayan projenin temel bulguları sunulup, yine bu proje kapsamında geliştirilen ve lisansüstü öğrencilere çevrimiçi hizmet veren araştırma ve yayın etiği portalı tanıtılacaktır.

STRUCTURING OUR WRITING PRACTICE AROUND MEMORANDUMS

Writing is one of the core, if not THE core activity in academia. Developing a writing practice is often a challenging process, given that it requires us to acquire a disciplined approach to putting words on a page. In this short seminar, I will walk you through a few strategies I use to train my students to develop a writing practice. I will show you how writing by memorandums can help you create a more sustainable, long-term writing practice and make the process of writing an enjoyable journey.

QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS WITH MAXQDA: FROM STUDY TO DESIGN APPLICATION

The purpose of this talk is to provide an overview of designing legitimate qualitative research and to demonstrate using MAXQDA qualitative data analysis software tool for data management and analysis. Dr. Toraman will start with a brief introduction to qualitative research, including developing research questions and choosing appropriate study design along with data analysis strategies. Then, she will demonstrate how to organize and code qualitative data in MAXQDA.

AN INTRODUCTION TO SYSTEMATIC REVIEW AND META-ANALYSIS

Peer-reviewed journals have been publishing academic articles since the 1600s. Consequently, there is an ever-increasing body of literature in many areas that challenge practitioners, researchers, and other consumers of research studies. Due to variation in methodology, the quality of methods employed in studies, sampling differences, and other factors, study findings can be different, even contradictory to each other. Therefore, systematic review and meta-analysis studies are crucial in reviewing the literature in a replicable way and providing an overall snapshot of the extant literature.

UNDERSTANDING AND IMPROVING THE STRUCTURE OF YOUR WRITING

Many writers struggle to revise their own writing. It can be deeply challenging to see problems and confusions in writing that is inherently familiar. In particular, writers often lack the capacity to revise their writing at the structural level. This missing expertise is significant because readers are reliant on sound structure to understand what they are reading. To learn to see and revise structure requires new revision techniques.

INTEGRITY DILEMMAS IN RESEARCH

Like in any profession, students and researchers are faced with dilemmas:

Can I exclude particular observations from my research? Can I leave out certain statistics from the analysis I report? Can I use the same data set, or research idea, in multiple papers? Should I agree on a colleague being a co-author on a paper to which (s)he has not made a significant contribution? This webinar aims to expose you to such integrity dilemmas, and to support you in developing and honing your own "moral compass".
