BIO
Amanda Barany is a postdoctoral scholar at the Penn Center for Learning Analytics (PCLA) and an instructor for Quantitative Ethnography and Epistemic Network Analysis at Penn Graduate School of Education. Her research interests include developing robust approaches to automate qualitative data analysis procedures, including the use of GPT for automated coding and codebook development. Her research also focuses on the development and implementation of games as learning tools to support achievement, motivation and identity development in learners. Dr. Barany earned her PhD from the Educational Leadership and Learning Technologies program at Drexel University, working in the Games and Learning for Interactive Digital Environments lab to design targeted game-based learning interventions to support student success.

SEMINAR DESCRIPTION
This work is an introduction to the emerging practices and techniques for automating elements of the qualitative data analysis process developed by scholars at the Penn Center for Learning Analytics. In particular, the work will provide a summary of practical suggestions for using GPT as a "co-researcher" for processes such as thematic analysis of qualitative data, codebook refinement, and automated coding.The seminar will be conducted in English.
